In practising the legal profession, an attorney assists clients, by lawful means and in accordance with the law, in enforcing their rights and fulfilling their obligations. An attorney also seeks, where appropriate, to facilitate the amicable settlement of disputes between opposing parties.
In the interests of the client, an attorney may, among other things, provide legal representation in civil matters, offer legal advice, prepare and review contracts, submissions and other legal documents, and represent clients before courts, public authorities and other bodies, depending on the nature of the matter. One of the fundamental pillars of the legal profession is the relationship of trust between attorney and client. As part of this relationship, an attorney is responsible for safeguarding the client’s personal data and is under a continuing duty to preserve legal professional privilege without limitation in time.
Legal fees are freely agreed between the attorney and the client, taking into account the nature and complexity of the matter. The agreed fee is recorded in the engagement agreement. Its amount depends, among other factors, on the complexity of the case, the time required and the scope of the legal services to be provided.

The vocation of an attorney is the protection of the law. It is the attorney who investigates the factual and legal circumstances of uncertain legal relationships, thereby assisting the judge in delivering a just judgment. It is the attorney who exercises oversight over the courts and public authorities, ensuring that errors committed in the course of their proceedings do not infringe the rights of citizens. The importance of the legal profession therefore requires that attorneys be accorded such a position within the system of justice as enables them fully to discharge the duties of their profession. Although an attorney directly represents individual citizens and protects their rights, the profession is ultimately founded upon the very idea of law itself, the principles of which must never be disregarded or contradicted, even for a single moment. It is through unwavering adherence to these principles that the attorney becomes an indispensable participant in the administration of justice.
